What started as a small community fundraiser has grown into one of the most anticipated annual traditions at Oak Park Place.
The Lemon Ice Box Pie sale, started about four years ago at Oak Park Place in Green Bay, has become a favorite event for residents, staff, families, and the surrounding community. And each year, demand keeps growing.
Two years ago, the team sold around 150 pies. Last year, that number climbed to 235. This year? An incredible 325 pies were sold.
Even better, proceeds from the sale help support the Alzheimer's Association.
At the center of the tradition is Oak Park Place cook Michael Zaki, whose family recipe has become somewhat legendary.
“Our cook Michael is the man!” the team shared. “This is one of his family recipes that has been passed down.”
As the fundraiser has expanded, so has the amount of work behind the scenes. Michael can make nearly 100 pies in a single day when fully focused on baking, with fellow cook Kaub also helping with production. This year’s sale required nearly four full days of baking and an estimated 40–50 staff hours between preparation, packaging, coordination, and distribution.
Despite the growth, the team says the process continues to run remarkably smooth.
“The team really does a terrific job communicating and is always eager to help,” they shared.
One of the most rewarding parts of the fundraiser has been watching repeat customers return year after year—and bring others with them.
Many people who initially purchased a single pie now order several for family gatherings, workplaces, or friends.
“We had a number of people start with one pie their first year,” the team explained. “Then the next year they order three or four to share with relatives, and by the third year they’re buying eight to ten pies for their entire office.”
This year alone, roughly ten customers ordered six or more pies.
As successful as this year’s fundraiser was, the Oak Park Place team is already thinking ahead.
“What are we most proud of?” they said. “The ability for us to set a goal next year for 400.”
More than just a fundraiser, the Lemon Ice Box Pie sale has become a reflection of teamwork, community support, and the passion staff bring to making a difference—one pie at a time.
